Liberals vote no on Conservative bail reform motion

Monday marked a milestone day for Parliamentarians in Ottawa, as they voted on a motion put forward by the Conservative party aiming to repeal Canada’s criminal code under Liberal leadership – the ‘Jail Not Bail’ Act. Prior to the vote, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre – along with other Tory MPs – demanded Liberal house members vote in favour of the notion to enforce stricter policies on repeat offenders in violent crimes who are released on bail. While the Liberal side agreed with Poilievre and his cabinet that they want to strengthen criminal justice reforms, they were more eager to “ensure reforms that are informed by evidence, and not ones that are seemingly copied and pasted from American-style bail laws,” as Justice Minister Sean Fraser said. Fraser promised new crime legislation would be announced in a “matter of weeks,” while Secretary of State responsible for Combatting Crime Ruby Sahota promised the Tory party would be “happy” to see their “much stronger” and “much more comprehensive” bill in the near future. Following the debate, the Jail Not Bail Act failed to pass through the House after a majority 196 members voted against the motion.
