Trois Rivieres (Three Rivers) is located in the Canadian province of Quebec where the Saint Maurice River meets the St. Lawrence River. The name is derived from the three mouths of the Saint Maurice created by two small islands. This historic city was founded on July 4, 1634 and was incorporated on June 10, 1857. Trois Rivieres is located in the Mauricie Region and has a population of around 137,000 (152,000 metro). Located at the junction of highway 40 and highway 55, Trois Rivieres is 140 kilometres northeast of Montreal and 129 KM southwest of Quebec City. The city is connected with the south shore of the St. Lawrence Seaway by the Laviolette Bridge. The bridge was opened on December 20, 1967 and is 2,707 metres or 8,881 feet in length.
