(14 Jul 1996) English/Nat Thousands of Irish nationalists have held a vigil in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, after a Roman Catholic man was fatally crushed by an army jeep on Saturday. Scores of people were wounded in the running battles between police and Catholics throughout the day, furious about this week's Protestant marches. Sinn Fein representative Martin McGuinness led the rally - urging for an end to the street violence. They began to fill the streets in the early evening. On the streets, burnt out vehicles and wreckage from two days of rioting lie strewn across the streets. But this most recent - and some say the most violent - rioting in Northern Ireland has left a Roman Catholic man dead. Sources say Dermot McShane was struck by a police armored car in Londonderry. It's the first death reported since rioters began venting their anger Thursday over two Protestant marches through Catholic neighborhoods. Rioters set fire to vehicles and attacked police in the Ballymurphy district of west Belfast overnight. And serious rioting and vehicle hijackings were also reported in Catholic parts of south, north and east Belfast, and several other towns. Martin McGuinness, the Londonderry leader of Sinn Fein, spoke at the rally following the march. SOUNDBITE: (English) "So why should we respond? We should respond as we have done tonight. This powerful message will be seen throughout the world tonight and all day tomorrow. And we will be here again tomorrow night and the people in Belfast are mobilising also and the Nationalist community, a united community, throughout the length and breadth of this state will show to the British government and to the Unionists in the most peaceful way possible that we are not going to lie down under the jackboots of the British government." SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think that clearly, coming out of Dublin people are very very disturbed at the turn of events - the Dublin government have said quite openly now that they believe it is time for discussions, negotiations, to take place again. They have offered meetings to Sinn Fein and of course we - as we have always done in the past - we will engage in dialogue with the Irish government and anyone else who wishes to seriously engage in the process of resolving this conflict."
