Trump confirms Apple's $100 billion investment in US, teases 100% tariffs on imported chips

Alongside Apple CEO Tim Cook, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that Apple intends to increase its U.S. investments by an additional $100 billion over the next four years. Apple previously said it intended to invest $500 billion domestically, a figure it will now increase to $600 billion, as confirmed in the Oval Office Wednesday. In recent months, Trump has criticized the tech company and Cook for efforts to shift iPhone production to India to avoid tariffs his administration planned for China. Cook's tone, however, was different when asked by Trump to speak to reporters. The business mogul said Apple is a "proud American company, and we believe deeply in the promise of this great nation." Trump also said tariffs of "approximately 100 per cent" will soon be applied to chips and semi-conductors not manufactured in the U.S. Following up on Trump's comment, Cook said Apple is currently on track to make 19 billion chips in 24 factories across 12 states, adding that by 2026, all cover glass for iPhones and Apple Watches will be made strictly in Kentucky.
