North Yorkshire's Tablelands. Hawnby Hill and the Hambletons

The Hawnby Hill and the Hambletons in North Yorkshire are typified by deeply incised river valleys, steep upper slopes and flat-tops - essentially they are tablelands. Their striking shape is caused by the underlying geology - soft clay (It is Oxford Clay, not Gault which I say in the video - sorry)is overlain by harder sandstone and limestone. Where rivers cut down into the clay they rapidly erode to the harder sandstones beneath resulting in deeply incised valleys. But the topping limestone is hard and resists erostion giving the hills their flat tops and steep, cliffy, upper slopes. A lovely bit of geologically-controlled landscape.
