9 WEIRD, BUT FUN SCANDINAVIAN SAYINGS AND EXPRESSIONS #scandinavian #denmark #danmark In this video, we have fun guessing the meaning behind different Scandinavian sayings and expressions. We base this lesson on the Nordic languages from a book, Cows on Ice & Owls in the Bog. The book title itself is based on Scandinavian expressions. We start with six Danish sayings since we have been living in Denmark for four years and can speak some Danish. We try to guess the meanings behind each of these Danish expressions: Ugler i mosen (owls in the bog): a Danish expression that means something suspicious in going on. En lækker sild (a delicious herring): something you say in Denmark if you’re referring to your loved one. Klap lige hesten (just pat the horse): an expression in Denmark that means you need to calm down. Det blæser en halv pelican (it’s blowing half pelican): a phrase in Denmark to describe really heavy winds. Det regner skomagerdrenge (it’s raining cobbler boys): a Danish saying that is used to describe really heavy rain. Træde i spinate (step into the spinach): a saying in Denmark for stepping in it. In Norway they say “step into the salad” and in Sweden they say “step into the piano”. After six Danish sayings we start to guess sayings from the other Scandinavian countries. Things they say in Denmark are often based on expressions from other Scandinavian countries like Sweden, Norway and Finland. Ei ole suu tuohesta (don’t have a mouth full of birch bark): a Finnish saying for someone who is an enthusiastic drinker. Få betalt för gammel ost (get paid for old cheese): a Swedish saying that means you will be on the receiving end of revenge. Lastly we cover det er helt på tryney (it’s completely on the snout): a Norweigian saying that means everything is ridiculous. After we discuss language and the fun parts of moving to Scandinavia and learning new phrases. Living in Denmark means adopting new sayings and Danish expressions that we have never used before.
