The decision for epilepsy surgery is individualized and doesn’t have to be a last resort. For children whose seizures start early, surgery can have a significant impact on seizure outcome and neurodevelopment. Visit https://mayocl.in/2DT8wMS to learn more about pediatric epilepsy care at Mayo Clinic or to request an appointment. Dr. Lily Wong-Kisiel, a pediatric neurologist specializing in epilepsy at Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, discusses the various types of pediatric epilepsy surgery. For children, epilepsy surgery is mostly commonly used for patients whose seizures are caused by a malformation of the brain. These are congenital malformations which may be difficult to detect. They can range from focal dysplasia or may involve an entire hemisphere. For epilepsy surgery for children, there are various types of eligibility. Focal resective surgery involves identifying and removing a single origin point for seizures. There are additional types of surgery for other seizure types including drop seizure in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. For these patients, corpus callosotomy may be an effective surgical treatment for reducing seizures. Hemispherectomy, or disconnection surgery, is used to disconnect a major area of the brain that may be causing seizures.
