The modality principle states: use graphics and narration not graphics and printed text. Since printed text must initially be processed visually before being passed into the auditory or verbal channel, this means the leaner must use the visual channel as well as the auditory channel for printed text. And if we are also presenting graphics to the visual channel this then quickly overloads the visual channel and therefore interferes with processing. Here’s what Richard Mayer has written about this. “When verbal material must enter through the visual channel, the words must take a complex route through the system and must also compete for attention with the illustration that is being processed via the visual channel” (2003 p6) Did you miss the Introduction video?
