BACK IN INDIA after so many years! What a week in Madurai. I took the little known ferry from Sri Lanka into India and then an overnight bus to the city that never sleeps, the “thoonga nagaram” that is Madurai. The city wasn't how I remember it, massive construction projects everywhere; as the city goes through multiple redevelopment projects. Broken roads, swirls of dust but through it all the kindness of the people and the food of Madurai that never fails to pack a punch left me glowing. I think my favourite moment from this trip and possibly one of the highlights of my year would be meeting the family in the neighbourhood we stayed at and being warmly invited to attend the temple tiruvila with them. I was inspired by the younger generation, meeting the 22-year-old owner of Mr.V Chappatti Corner in Sellur who’s a young entrepreneur with the deepest passion for his craft; makes the best chappatis, parothas, curries in town! I can’t wait for him to open a branch in Malaysia. Try his veggie chappati rolls, I promise it’ll change your life. From the most flavourful briyanis, icy Jigarthandas, to vibrant local tiruvilas, Madurai was, is, and will always be stunning, a must-visit city in India.
