🏛 Strengthening the Path to Justice: LHR Hosts Strategic Litigation Roundtable Discussion On February 28 - March 1, 2026 Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) convened a landmark roundtable discussion in Bishoftu at Lake Bishoftu Resort. The event brought together some of the finest legal minds in the country to reflect on our journey of Strategic Human Rights Litigation before domestic courts and the Council of Constitutional Inquiry. Strategic litigation is more than just appearing in court; it is about using the law to create systemic change. This roundtable served as a critical "check-point" to assess our strengths, identify challenges, and re-strategize our future efforts to ensure that human rights protections are not just theoretical, but enforceable. On the two days of high-level legal analysis comprising senior lawyers and distinguished academics—dived deep into LHR’s case files and comparative international experiences. • Day 1: Discussions centered on the technicality of pleadings, the complexities of legal standing, and ensuring government accountability and due diligence in sensitive matters like mob incidents and forced evictions. • Day 2: We shifted focus to judicial jurisdiction, the exhaustion of administrative remedies, and the justiciability of human rights. We also explored the critical roles of political bodies in human rights adjudication, remedies for bringing social change and weight of evidence in securing effective remedies. We were honored to be joined by Senior Lawyers, Academic Experts, LHR Members and Individual Legal Specialists and Representatives from Lawyer-based Associations. While participants commended LHR’s dedication to taking public interest matters to court, they also provided a roadmap of recommendations. These insights will be instrumental in creating a more conducive environment for human rights litigation in Ethiopia. Our goal remains clear: to ensure that the domestic legal system serves as a robust shield for the rights and dignities of every citizen.
