On a visual approach to RWY36R at AUS airport in Austin, TX, we overshot the runway by accident and got close to RWY36L approach path. We did notice it relatively quickly and corrected immediately. Everybody makes mistakes, that's part of being human, the difference between people is how you deal with them. Being military trained pilots (both of us), we watched the recording again, debriefed, understood how we could have been better, and moved on. Here are my takes from being PM: 1. Cockpit set up - as PM, I did not line our FMS approach path once we were vectored for the visual, now is it absolutely vital? no, but it is one more protective layer that helps us avoid errors like this one. In addition I should have switched my lower PFD display back to the CDI view once I finished the 10,000 checklist. 2. Backing up the PF - as we were approaching RWY36R's approach path, we dropped the gear to slow down, my priority should have been making sure we are flying where we are supposed to and only then making sure we get 3 greens. Both of these are important, and that's why we should have also tried to avoid having these 2 elements overlap in terms of timing when they happened on the approach.
