On May 1st, 2022, a group of teenagers were driving to a baby shower on Interstate 20 in Georgia when a woman in a black sedan pulled up beside them, pointed a gun, and fired. Eighteen-year-old Ashlin Crouch was shot in the face near her eye. The shooter's motive? A lane change. THE INCIDENT: It started innocently enough. Driver Alan Marcos changed lanes on the highway — the kind of routine maneuver that happens millions of times every day. But one woman took it personally. She began following their truck, pulling alongside them, flipping them off, and pointing a gun at the teenagers inside. The teens tried to de-escalate. They rolled down their windows. They told her to calm down. They were not looking for a fight. But as the woman exited the highway, she fired one shot into their truck. The bullet struck 18-year-old Ashlin Crouch near her left eye. Doctors later confirmed she suffered brain swelling and arterial damage — injuries that could easily have been fatal. THE SHOOTER HAD HER OWN CHILDREN IN THE CAR. THE 911 CALL: "My best friend is shot." "There's too much blood. I'm going to pass out." These were the terrified words of teenagers who had just watched their friend get shot on a public highway over nothing. Police responded to a Shell gas station on Fairburn Road where the truck had pulled over, and Ashlin was rushed to Grady Hospital. THE INVESTIGATION: All three witnesses — Amariah Moreno, Nia Gates, and driver Alan Marcos — told police the exact same story. A cell phone video captured 3-4 seconds of the incident, showing the shooter's face clearly. Crime scene investigators recovered the bullet, blood evidence, and a hat pierced by gunfire from inside the truck. With the suspect unidentified, police allowed the family to post a still from the video online. Within minutes, tips flooded in. Multiple callers said the same name: Brittney Griffith. THE SHOCKING AFTERMATH: After shooting a teenager in the face, Brittney Griffith drove to a nail salon and got her toes done. She then threw her Smith & Wesson .380 pistol into the Chattahoochee River near Six Flags. She thought she had gotten away with it. She hadn't. THE INTERROGATION: That same night, Brittney walked into the police department and turned herself in — but not to confess. She denied everything. She claimed she didn't have a gun. She said she was in Carrollton that day but hadn't shot anyone. She admitted the photo looked like her but insisted it wasn't. When detectives showed her the evidence — photos of her pointing the gun, the video, her own Facebook photos she had tried to delete — she kept denying. Until she couldn't anymore. "There was road rage and I shot a girl in the face." Those were her own words. Followed immediately by: "I didn't mean to shoot the girl." And then: "I didn't shoot anybody." Back and forth, back and forth — until finally she admitted the truth. THE CHARGES: Brittney Griffith was arrested and charged with: 4 counts of aggravated assault 3 counts of cruelty to children (her own children were in the car) Aggravated battery Possession of a firearm during a felony Tampering with evidence (throwing the gun in the river) THE VICTIM: Ashlin Crouch was discharged from the hospital several days later and continues to recover from her injuries. She was shot in the face for being in a car that changed lanes. This case raises urgent questions about road rage, gun violence, and what we owe each other on our public highways. A teenager nearly died. A mother faces decades in prison. And three children watched it all happen from the backseat. ⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This video discusses gun violence and a shooting.
