Visiting St Peter Port - a tender port. Saga - Spirit of Adventure.

We’re off again with Saga on Spirit of Adventure to St Peter Port in Guernsey. This is a tender port in that cruise ships are too big to dock there. We needed to get a ticket for allocation to a specific boat. We went to the North cape bar to collect our ticket and to wait for our boat to be called. We made our way down to the gangway where we stepped off the side of the cruise ship on to one of the life boats which would take us to shore. The whole process was very well organised and we felt safe the whole time. Tendering is a fun thing to do. It is really interesting being low down, close to the water - such a contrast to being high up on the ship. The tender also gives you an interesting view of the cruise ship. As usual the crew were organised, professional and caring in the way they helped us off the lifeboat and we had a warm welcome from representatives of St Peter Port. The quayside is full of life with interesting things to look at and the place gives one confidence that there are good facilities such that one’s needs will be met. Our visit was in 2025 which was the 80th anniversary of the island’s liberation from the 2nd world war German occupation. It is a charming place to visit with pretty streets but also a good selection of shops - I bought myself a pair of loafers here. A good view of the Anglican Town Church with its beautiful stonework and stained glass windows is one of the pleasures of Church square, which is a great place to relax. There was an atmosphere about the place that was welcoming and peaceful. We enjoyed walking through the streets going up as far as Trinity Square before turning back and heading for the Museum and Candie gardens. On the way we stopped to look at Strangers’ Cemetary which was set up in 1780 for people not of the parish of St Peter Port to be buried. It also contains the 4th location in the 1st part of the Victor Hugo trail, the theme here is education. Sargeant Samuel Macdonald was buried here in 1802, and this has some of his story. In Candie gardens there is an imposing statue of Queen Victoria, marking her diamond jubilee and is a replica of statues in London and Aberdeen. It is a pretty park with views out to sea including a view of Spirit of Adventure. In 1914 this statue of Victor Hugo was a gift from the French in appreciation of the hospitality shown to Hugo by the people of Guernsey. The Guernsey Museum is here including a cafe where we had some refreshments. We walked back through the town, taking the tender back to the ship Date of visit: 10th June 2025.
