Girona Bike Rides: Climb Guide - Santa Pellaia (from Cassa de la Selva)

Road cyclists love this climb to the 11th century sanctuary of Santa Pellaia, just 17km (10 miles) or so from Girona. It's part of the legendary Els Angels-Santa Pellaia loop and it's often called Hincapie Hill, but none of the locals use that name. It's a gentle, snaking ascent to around 330m above sea level and can be climbed in either direction. This Climb Guide describes it using the town of Cassa de la Selva as a starting point, which is the shortest way to reach it from Girona. The climb takes you over the Gavarres mountain range and opens up the region of Emporda and the Costa Brava coastline. Or it can take you to the beautiful medieval village of Monells and on to climb the reverse side of Els Angels (see my Climb Guide) It's a hugely enjoyable climb in its own right and extremely popular with everone from pro riders to recreational cyclists.
