We recommend watching this video with subtitles for proper reference of individuals and model numbers. UPDATE: DWOJO's full names is David Wojnarowski. We apologize for the misspelling. About the sound, this video was done nearly five months ago. At the same time as the Classic Audio Loudspeaker videos with John Wolff. We have made a number of improvements to our microphones since that time. There is not much we can do about room acoustics other than to avoid live rooms. Its' a tradeoff between acoustics, lighting and domestic situations. We will continue to have to juggle these parameters in our videos since we are doing these in people's homes without a lighting and sound crews. I believe we have fixed all our audio and video issues in our more recent videos. This episode features the Great Plains Audio GPA 604-8H III Duplex loudspeaker. This driver was designed and built by Bill Hanuschak, founder and Owner of Great Plains Audio. Bill was one of the last of the great audio engineers that worked at the original Altec Lansing company when they closed their doors in 1998. To continue the Altec legacy, Bill purchased all of the Altec tooling and founded Great Plains Audio. Great Plains Audio serviced, designed and built drivers per and sometimes surpassed Altec Lansing specifications, hence continuing this Great American tradition. However, since Great Plains Audio became Great Plains Acoustics in 2018, the status of that company remains unclear (as of 8/6/2025). You can reach out to them and get the latest status. The recording of this episode occurred in one of the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. At the home of Senior Audiokarma member DWOJO. David is one of the most knowledgeable person on Altec Lansing products, specifically the 604 line. In this episode, he shared his audio journey from the time when he was a pre-teen, to becoming one of the Senior Members of the Audiokarma forum. He owns many Altec Lansing speakers. Including nearly all versions of the Altec Lansing 604 drivers. Based on his decades of experience with them, it is his opinion that the GPA 604-8H Mark III version, developed by Bill Hanuscak and features a new horn, when actively biamped and placed in a 7 cubic foot cabinet, is the best sounding among all of the 604 variants that he owns. Is the GPA 604-8H Mark 3 the the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) among all 604 driver types? Let us know of your opinion(s) in the comments section. A significant amount of the conversation with David scattered throughout the episode centered around the annual Audiokarma festivals that were held in Livonia, Michigan in the 2,000s. That festival, also known as AKFEST was a true vintage audio lover's dream. Maybe someday, some enterprising vintage audio fan will revive it. Dave uses Elite Tube amplifiers from Syd Beaumont in Canada. You can read about AKFEST at audiokarma.org. Where you can find posts by DWOJO, Tom and myself. If you are not an Audiokarma member, you should consider joining it. Enjoy!!
