Heartworm disease is not only a poorly named parasite of dogs, it is not well understood by dog owners due to lots of misinformation perpetuated by even veterinarians. Canine heartworm disease is actually a type of roundworm that spends its adult life in the pulmonary artery coming off the heart, not usually in the heart itself. Doc Pawsitive, Clair Thompson, "Leader of the Pack" at East Stroudsburg Veterinary Hospital and PAWS/Pocono Animal Wellness Services has recently been seeing a lot more heartworm disease in dogs then he has over the last 20 years! The reason for the increased incidence of heartworm infections has nothing to do with resistance to medication or failure of people in the Poconos to use heartworm prevention. The simple explanation for increased numbers of heartworm positive dogs has been the Internet! The Internet has increased the ability of dog lovers to locate dogs from rescues around the nation and many of the dogs coming up North from rescues in the warmer Southern states are bringing heartworm, whipworm, hookworm and other parasites and diseases with them. This rescued beagle originated in Arkansas and brought her heartworm infection and whipworm infection with her as she travelled North. Be especially certain to take any new pet to the vet for a thorough physical examination and any appropriate testing to avoid unnecessary pain and expense down the road.
