Up to the close of Sikh era in late 1840s, Punjab was living in medieval era. There was no public communication infrastructure. The few canals that existed were in poor repair, it was practically roadless and there were hardly any bridges across rivers. In educational field, condition was primitive. There were no public schools. Religious and linguistic education was available only in a few mosque run madrassahs. There were no hospitals, libraries or playing fields. On taking rule of Punjab, and Lahore, the British commenced a a large scale development, changing the face of urban and rural life. They had a pool of local and British engineers whose energy and talent matched the speed of development. Today's talk will recount the services provided by these visionary engineers, architects and builders, as a way of paying homage to their careers and accomplishments. ● About the Speaker: » Parvez Mahmood is a retired Group Captain from the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
