Virus (ウイルス) is an interactive adventure, with a lot of FMV (animation and CGIs) scenes that developed and published by Hudson back in 1997, exclusively for the Sega Saturn system and the Japanese market. It was made in collaboration with the Sega development team and featured characters designed by Madhouse (animation studio). The same year (1997) it was adapted into an anime television series as VIRUS-Virus Buster Surge which was directed by Masami Obari. In the far future, most of the human beings use a virtual enviroment called "Cyber Net" as their only source for emotional expression ~side effect from the huge technological development~. Lately, Cyber Net is not a safe place to connect your body because of a deadly "Virus". An elite team called Blue Metal ~sent by the authorities~ tried to find and annihilate the virus but.. for some unknown reason, noone survived. Our main hero is a member of a similiar elite unit called Stand and his main goal is to solve the mystery behind that Virus. According to the front cover, Virus is a hybrid adventure and ..it's accurate! In manners of gameplay, it is extremely unique (for the western standards) as it combines elements from 2 different genres, adventures and actions/shooters. The core mechanics give a sense of : Snatcher or Policenauts and you have to investigate environments, collect items and infos. This is your only way to progress further in the story. In top of that, there are a plenty of great fmvs (high production values) that accompany you through the scenario progress. The action parts can only be met in special events where you fight enemies. You can use guns, shields and even items. Every action has an AP point cost and it's up to you to use them with care. Althought the reviews from the western magazines/sites weren't favorable towards the game, the Japanese Saturn Magazine and it's audience seemed to appreciate it's cyberpunk uniqueness by rating it --- 8/10. Overall, Virus is not a bad game. The production values are very high, the story is intriguing (if you like cyberpunk) and the interactive experience feels quite rewarding. But being impressive doesn't necessarily mean it's a game for everyone, especially for those who are not familiar with the Japanese language (heavy text) and the adventure/simulation genre.
