The painter and sculptor worked alongside other German artists who sought new ways of making art by avoiding the dominant artistic precepts of the time, namely Pop art and abstract expressionism. Like Georg Baselitz, A.R. Penck and Jörg Immendorff, Lüpertz wants to return to a more emotional and figurative form of painting, considering the style of Francis Picabia as a pioneer in this field. His mixture of figuration and abstraction tends to simplify forms while amplifying their characteristics in large-scale works that depict close-ups of heads and faces. Although the use of certain German historical themes arouses controversy, Lüpertz remains convinced that it is necessary to confront them. Born on April 25, 1941 in Liberec in the Czech Republic, the artist lives and works between Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe in Germany.
