In today's image, we see a planetary nebula - this is the end state of most stars in the universe including our Sun. The core is compacted down to a white dwarf star - an object about the size of Earth, but incredibly dense. The outer layers are expelled out into space and are visible as a planetary nebula for tens of thousands of years before they disperse out into space.
