"We are in the business of getting young people housed and keeping them housed." At HomePlate Youth Services, we believe that every young person deserves a sense of belonging and the resources to thrive. In this episode of the Equip Show, our Executive Director, Dorian Russell, sits down with Paul Morris to discuss the "secret sauce" behind our work: building a path toward safety and stability together, whatever that means for the individual person. We are working every day to meet youth ages 12–24 who are experiencing housing instability, exactly where they are. But as we look toward the future, we are facing a critical "mismatch". The number of youth seeking our help has tripled in three years, while the resources to support them have been reduced and are under further threat. On this podcast, we discuss: Our Approach: How we use trauma-informed care to build trust with youth who have been let down by systems in the past. The Hidden Crisis: Why youth homelessness in Washington County doesn't always look like what you see in the city of Portland or other cities. The Power of SHS: How the Supportive Housing Services tax has allowed us to do the crucial work of getting people housed and how we've helped 17 babies be born into stable housing this past year. The Challenges: A sobering look at why we’ve had to make the difficult choice to cut employment and education programs due to funding volatility. How You Can Help: Why your vote and your local advocacy are the most powerful tools we have to create societal change. "Youth homelessness is a public policy choice." We invite you to watch, listen, and join us in our vision: To create a welcoming community where all youth feel a sense of belonging and value, and that housing is safe, accessible, and sustainable.
