Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. Formed in 1976. The band had a long string of hit singles including "Breakdown", "American Girl", "Refugee", "The Waiting", "Learning to Fly", and "Mary Jane's Last Dance", among many others, that stretched over several decades of work. The band's music was characterized as both Southern rock and heartland rock, cited alongside artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and John Mellencamp as progenitors of that genre that arose in the late 1970s and 1980s. While the heartland rock movement waned in the 1990s, the band remained active and popular, touring regularly until Petty's death in 2017, after which the Heartbreakers disbanded. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, their first year of eligibility. Petty's early bands included the Sundowners, the Epics, and Mudcrutch. In 1974, Mudcrutch signed with Shelter Records and re-located to Los Angeles, California. They released one single, "Depot Street", in 1975, which failed to chart; the group consequently disbanded (I have a cover of the song here). From 'Damn the Torpedoes', their third studio album released on October 19th, 1979. This was the first of three Petty albums originally released by the Backstreet Records label, distributed by MCA Records. It built on the commercial success and critical acclaim of his two previous albums. The album went on to become certified Triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was a breakthrough for Petty and the Heartbreakers and was their first top 10 album, rising to #2 for seven weeks and kept from #1 by Pink Floyd's The Wall on the Billboard albums chart. In 2003, the album was ranked number 313 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and 231 in a 2020 revised list. Subsequent appraisals have remained positive, with AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine regarding it as "one of the great records of the album rock era". Rolling Stone placing it at number 313 on "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list in 2003, the list's 2012 edition had it ranked 315th, and the 2020 edition ranked it at number 231. In 2000 it was voted number 537 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums. 'Here Comes My Girl' peaked at number 59 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on May 24, 1980. In a November 2003 interview, guitarist Mike Campbell explained the story behind "Here Comes My Girl": "It's very similar to "Refugee" - those two were written the same week. I made some demos and Tom liked those two. "Here Comes My Girl" was interesting because we had the chorus and Tom wasn't sure how to do the verse, he kept trying to sing it different ways and he finally came across sort of half-talking it, and that's when the song seemed to come to life." Petty remembers Campbell's chords and tune on a cassette tape, and struggling with the lyrics. Bassist Ron Blair told Petty that what he had was a "really good piece of music." Petty learned to use narration in the verses, similar to Blondie or The Shangri-Las. Petty said the chorus was inspired by The Byrds. Cash Box called it a "truly excellent single" with a "convincingly honest narrative intro" and a "Byrds-like hook."
