The Rice Research and Development Institute (RRDI), located in Bathalagoda, Sri Lanka, serves as the national center dedicated to enhancing rice productivity and profitability. Established in 1952 as the Central Rice Breeding Station, it was later restructured and renamed in 1994 to encompass a multidisciplinary approach to rice research and development. RRDI's main facility is situated in Bathalagoda, Ibbagamuwa, within the Kurunegala district. The institute oversees seven sub-stations across the country, each addressing region-specific rice cultivation challenges: Regional Rice Research & Development Centre – Bombuwala Rice Research Station – Ambalantota Rice Research Station – Labuduwa Agricultural Research Station – Bentota Agricultural Research Station – Sammanthurai Regional Research Station – Murunkan Agricultural Research Station – Paranthan The institute comprises various technical and operational divisions, including Agronomy, Weed Science, Soil Science, Biotechnology, Grain Quality, Plant Pathology, Plant Breeding, Water Management & GIS, Socio-Economics, Entomology, and Farm divisions. These divisions collectively focus on developing high-yielding rice varieties, improving grain quality, and introducing advanced rice production technologies. In recent developments, RRDI has successfully identified two rice varieties that can serve as substitutes for Basmati rice. This achievement aims to reduce the country's reliance on imported Basmati rice, particularly benefiting the tourism and hospitality sectors. As of the latest available information, Dr. D. M. J. B. Senanayake serves as the Director of RRDI. For further information or inquiries, RRDI can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone at +94 372 258561.
