For a long time, we have taken it for granted that “the younger you are, the more progressive you tend to be, and the older you get, the more conservative you become.” However, this formula no longer adequately explains today’s reality. In the past, relatively stable jobs, asset accumulation, and clear pathways for social mobility were more widely available. As people aged and acquired more to protect, a tendency toward conservatism often followed. Today’s younger generations, however, share the experience that even sustained effort does not reliably lead to the same level of stability. As a result, political orientation today is not simply a matter of age, but is shaped by economic insecurity, perceptions of fairness, gendered experiences, and how social threats are interpreted. In other words, today’s young people are not automatically progressive, nor do individuals naturally become conservative simply by growing older. The core of contemporary political orientation lies not in “how young someone is,” but in “who encounters which risks first, and through which interpretive language.”
