On November 1, 2006, using the screen name "Stanemac12," Stanley, 54 years of age, began chatting with a Perverted Justice decoy who was posing as a thirteen-year-old boy. Stanley later sets up a meeting. Sting Stanley arrives to the bust house on November 2, the first night of the sting. The decoy, played by Dan Schrack, stands on the steps and delivers his iconic line, "How ya doin' Stanley?" After some little discussion between the two, Chris Hansen emerges. In addition to apologizing, Stanley alleges that he understood it was a setup and that he felt it was a "joke." When Chris asks why he knew it was a setup, Stanley reveals that the reason he knew it was a setup was it was to catch people who go after children. He continues by saying that it was his first time ever meeting a child online. Stanley admits to teaching math in a junior high school. Chris asks Stanley if he ever had inappropriate conversations with kids. Stanley replies that he has successfully taught for 23 years and denies having ever done so. Stanley acknowledges that he has four children that he hasn't seen in a long time. Chris asks Stanley if he'd be fine with an adult man wanting to meet his kids, and Stanley replies that he wouldn't. Afterward, he claims he was unaware that the boy was thirteen. Later, Stanley brought up the subject of religion, saying that "the part of [him] that's Christian" would persuade the child against having relations. Hansen reads back his graphic chat and questions where in The Bible were the explicit things he wanted to do with a child. Chris then humorously questioned whether his explicit conversation was in the Old Testament or New Testament. After once more apologizing, Stanley declares that he "learned his lesson" and that he would never enter the chat room again. When Chris reveals that he is a Dateline NBC reporter and the cameras start rolling, Stanley apologizes yet again, says he has again "learned his lesson," thanks Chris for helping him, and calls himself an "excellent teacher." After leaving the home, police officers command Stanley to the ground, and then arrest him. Police search his car and find MapQuest directions to the sting house. He was photographed, booked, and brought in for questioning. Arrest and police interview Stanley admits during his police interview that he is extremely anxious and that being arrested could "ruin" him. Although Stanley believes he had a "gut feeling" it was wrong, he persisted in the online conversation since he believed the boy wasn't thirteen. Stanley reiterates his claim that he is an "excellent teacher" and that he doesn't want to be fired. He states that his principal is going to be "so shocked" when they find out about his arrest. Following his arrest, Stanley was brought before Judge Kathy Hayden, who set his bail at $50,000. The school where Stanley worked was notified right away by Chief Billy Myrick. He was placed on administrative leave.
