São Mateus da Calheta is a fishing village with whaling traditions and approximately 3,777 inhabitants located on Terceira Island in the Azores archipelago in Portugal. The village is the most important fishing community on the island and the second most important in the Azores. The central core of the village is around the port area, structured around numerous small streets and alleys, characterized by fishermen's houses. The higher part of the parish is still markedly rural, presenting the linear settlement typical of the island's rural parishes.
