Cherokee Days 2016 - United Keetoowah Band History

Ernestine Berry, Director of the United Keetoowah Band John Hair Cultural Center and Museum, gives a talk on the history of the Cherokees with a focus on the Keetoowah Band and how they became a separate federally recognized tribe. Her talk begins with the origin story of the Cherokee and the original mound, or Mother Town, Kituwah, which is a different spelling of Keetoowah. She gives historic details about the turmoil resulting with interactions and intermarriage with the Europeans. Over time pressures from settlers and the US government and the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears cause most Cherokees to move to settlements to the west in "Indian Country (Oklahoma/Arkansas)." The story continues with sides different Cherokee groups supported in the US Civil War. The Keetoowahs supported the Union. The struggles resulting from Oklahoma statehood and the Allotment period and Termination further complicated the Cherokee situation and the status of the Keetoowahs. In the Reorganization Period the Keetoowah band reorganized with federal recognition in 1950. The Cherokee Nation began its reorganization as a separate tribe in 1976. The different tribes' approach to tribal membership accounts for the different size and makeup of their nations.
