In Part 5 of my series on creating a White Pine (Goyomatsu) bonsai mixed media artwork, I develop a color scheme that will guide the painting process. This color plan is based on colors found in the marble paper and is refined using color theory. We also discuss traditional Japanese art principles. The process begins by identifying two key tones in the marble paper—light yellow and mid-tone grey—and then expanding the palette to include yellow-orange (warm) and yellow-green (cool). With the help of a color wheel, I explore complementary colors and define their relationships. You'll learn how to: Use a color wheel with primary and secondary color triangles Determine value (lightness or darkness) of colors Identify warm vs. cool colors Understand how color influences visual balance Next, I introduce the influence of Ukiyo-e Japanese prints, focusing on how gradations of color help center the composition and guide the viewer’s eye. Inspired by this approach, I begin painting the background with watercolor, blending tones from dark to light to mimic the traditional effect. 🎯 Key Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 00:35 Determining the Colors 02:54 Creating a Color Wheel 03:50 Understanding Value 04:55 Finding the Opposite Colors 07:10 Value Range 07:29 Identifying Warm vs Cool Colors 08:10 Ukiyo-e Prints 09:30 Gradation of Colors 10:30 Applying Watercolor 19:50 Completion of Applied Gradation In Part 6, I’ll show how the background is developed using stencils and acrylic paint, adding another dimension to this layered piece. 📌 Subscribe to my channel @RonaldReekers to follow the full journey! 📌 Support my work on Patreon: / ronreekers 📌 Explore my artwork: www.reekersart.com 📌 Follow on Instagram: @ronreekers #BonsaiArt #MixedMediaArt #ColorTheory #WatercolorTechnique #UkiyoeArt #JapaneseAesthetics #Goyomatsu #RonReekersArt #ArtInProgress #ColorGradation #CreativeProcess
