Pleurisy is the inflammation of the pleura. it is another name for pleuritis. Pleura consists of 2 parts that is 1) Visceral pleura 2) Parietal pleura Visceral pleura attached directly to the lungs Parietal pleura attached directly to the rib cage This layer gets inflamed due to infection, autoimmune reaction, or as a complications of a lung disease This both layers are separated and lubricated by the presence of a small amount of pleural fluid which acts like a cushion to the lungs. But when both of these layers inflames the fluid cannot fully lubricate them and the rubbing of both the layer especially during breathing in causes sharp stabbing pain. This pain is termed as the pleuritic pain. Pleurisy can be caused by a lot of factors , below are few listed ones: -Infection Lung cancer Injury to ribs or thoracic cavity Pulmonary embolism Sickle cell anemia Thoracic surgery Chemotherapy Radiotherapy Immunocompromised state Autoimmune condition Pleurisy may happen to anybody but usually people above the age of 65, people with autoimmune diseases or lung cancer are more prone to get affected by it.
