Winter Protection for Roses in New England

The season is several weeks later than normal this week and we're just getting the roses done for protection this winter. Moore Manor Lavender is located in Central Maine (Newport) and this is the first year for our Rose Garden. Here's the process: 1. Trim the extra long rose canes to accommodate the fabric cover. 2. Loosen the soil and mulch around the base of the plant and pull up 8" or so in a mound, to protect the crown of the rose. 3. Use a loose mulch like straw or, in our case the prunings from the lavender. 4. Cover and pin or weigh down the fabric to keep the wind, freezing rain, and temperature extremes from harming the canes. Thanks for watching!
