So in this list, I'll be showing you 5 symbols that have lost their original meanings. 5) The Star Of David The star of David is now a symbol of Judaism. However, the symbol doesn't have any Jewish roots. In fact, before it was a Jewish symbol, you could find it in other religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. Hindus have been using the symbol for the longest. For Hindus, the symbol represents the fourth primary chakra, which is an energy point of the body. It's not known why so many religions used this symbol or if there is any link between them. Many say it could just be a coincidence after all the symbol is a very simple one to come up with. 4) The Skull And Crossbones If you see the skull and crossbones today, it usually means something is poisonous. For example, you'll find it on the packaging of many household chemicals. Another use of the symbol is for pirates, this has especially been made popular thanks to film and TV. However, the original use for the skull and crossbones comes from Spain. The Spanish used the symbol to label their cemeteries. Pirates then started using it because the symbol was already feared because of its association with death. 3) The Swastika This symbol today is one of the most famous symbols for all the wrong reasons. Its become infamous for being the symbol of the Nazi party. However the swastika isn't originally a nazi symbol and in fact, is commonly used by Hindus and Buddhists. For Hindus, the swastika is the symbol for their God Vishnu. But not only has it been used by various religions, it's truly a symbol used by numerous cultures around the world. These cultures include the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans and Celts. Much ancient pottery that's older than recorded history have been found with swastikas. Companies have also used the symbol, the Danish Brewery Carlsberg had the swastika on their bottles. However since WW2 and the symbol's association with the Nazi's its now obviously no longer used. 2) The ‘Okay’ Sign In America, this symbol means Okay. However, travel to some European countries and the same symbol is actually very offensive. In many Mediterranean countries, it's the symbol for Anus, so if you did it to someone you're basically calling them an arsehole. However, it does have a very old and positive meaning. Before it meant Okay or arsehole it was a symbol used by Buddhists and Hindus. For Buddhists, it meant teaching and reason. Therefore you'll find many artefacts of Lord Buddha making this sign. 1) Barber Poles Have you ever wondered why most barbers have the red and white pole outside their store? This dates back to a darker time where barbers did more than just cut hair and beards. You see back in the day people believed that you can cure sickness by bleeding the illness away. Barbers were practically surgeons and offered a service called bloodletting. Essentially they would cut the patients arm open and drain a good amount of blood. They would often hang the bloody bandages outside their store as a form of advertisement. On a windy day, these bandages would wrap themselves around a pole and that's where the barber pole symbol comes from. Essentially the symbol is an advertisement for a service that hopefully is no longer available. ------------------------------------------------------- Vlog Channel: / more5 Twitter: / officialall5 Instagram: / sam_all5 Snapchat: SamAll5YT Website: http://www.All5.me -------------------------------------------------------
