Robin Bain could 'quite easily' have shot himself LATEST A defence expert has introduced a new angle to the Bain trial by suggesting Robin Bain could have killed himself by holding the rifle as much as 22cm from his head. Robin Bain's son David is charged with murdering five members of his family on 20 June, 1994. The defence maintains the actual culprit was Robin who it says shot his family and then himself. Robin was killed by one shot to the head. Philip Boyce, a United Kingdom forensic firearms expert, used the murder rifle in the High Court in Christchurch today to show the jury how a person of Robin Bain's build could have positioned the rifle to inflict the same fatal wound Robin sustained. He said he believed Robin had most likely committed suicide because of the ease with which he could have reached the rifle's trigger to inflict the wound and in his view the head wound was a close contact or near contact one. However in cross-examination Boyce said Robin Bain could have been holding the rifle as much as 22cm from his head to take his own life. Several Crown experts have said Robin was shot from a distance of more than 20cm away which supports the Crown case that David hid behind curtains in the lounge in which Robin was found dead and shot him from a short distance. The new Boyce contention means he might have to give a further demonstration to the court tomorrow. The jury has asked for the rifle to be left in the jury room but it is hoped that reconstructions with the rifle can be left for witnesses giving evidence. In further answers to Crown counsel Robin Bates, Boyce agreed there were easier ways to shoot yourself than the method allegedly adopted by Robin Bain. Even a close contact wound, he said, did not exclude a homicide. WAS IT SUICIDE? All the positions showed Robin Bain could quite easily reach the trigger, Boyce said, who added his arm span was shorter than that of Robin Bain. For the demonstration he donned a special skull cap, which has a rod attached to mimic the trajectory of the bullet through Robin's head. Shown photographs of Robin Bain's body in the lounge of the Bain house, Boyce said the position of Robin's body was quite consistent with the various suicide positions he had already demonstrated. The same was true about where the rifle was found, he said. He said Robin's head wound was more likely than not to have been inflicted with the rifle against his temple or very close to it. The percentage of firearm suicides which displayed close contact wounds meant the bullet wound was likely to have been self inflicted, he said.
