What Awaits: Transitions and Future Possibilities for Japan-Philippine Relations | Chalieh Alob ABSTRACT This paper explored the overview of the Japan-Philippine Relationship as this year marks the 65th anniversary of the friendship between Japan and the Philippines. The relationship of both countries traces back to the pre-colonial state of Filipino history or the Muromachi period of Japanese history. Over the past few years, the two countries engaged in mutual cooperation that spans different areas, continuously securing stronger links than the previous ones. There are bilateral directions that should be sustained such as, their joint declaration of Strengthening Strategic Partnership for advancing the shared principles and goals of growth, peace, and security; Japan-Philippine Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA); and Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) to the Philippines. Some bilateral directions that should be pursued anew are agreements in regards to health and work. Furthermore, as two new leaders are ushering in this coming year, political, economical, and social possibilities are inevitable: great governance, human resource development, and declination of social stereotypes and inequalities. About the Competition The research competition aims to encourage Japan-related research among Filipino students, to disseminate knowledge, and exchange perspectives on Japanese Studies. It is organized by the UP Asian Center and the Japan Foundation, Manila.
