Other key events were the first Soviet spacecraft to reach the Moon, the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, and the debut of the Barbie doll. In 1959, the U.S. Air Force celebrated the graduation of its first class from the United States Air Force Academy, saw record-breaking achievements with the F-104 Starfighter, and conducted major demonstrations of its power at events like the World Congress of Flight. Other key events included the retirement of the B-36 bomber, the launch of the first satellite in the CORONA reconnaissance program (Discoverer 1), and the relocation of the US Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) headquarters to Germany. Military and technological highlights First Air Force Academy class: The Academy's first class graduated on June 3, 1959. B-36 Peacemaker retirement: The last of the B-36 bombers was retired in 1959, replaced by the B-52 Stratofortress as the primary nuclear delivery vehicle for the Strategic Air Command. Record-breaking flights: In December, an F-104 Starfighter set new altitude and time-to-climb records, reaching over 103,000 feet. Space and reconnaissance: The Air Force launched Discoverer 1 on February 28, the first satellite in the CORONA program intended to photograph the Earth from orbit.
