On February 11, 2022, US President Joe Biden ordered to unfreeze US$7 billion worth of the assets held in the US. But the assets are to be divided between victims of the September 11 attacks and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. Hundreds of Afghans took to the streets on February 15 to protest against Biden’s decision. Since international money stopped entering the country following the Taliban takeover, the UN says 90 per cent of Afghans have been living in poverty.
