I show you how I made a new compass to draw ellipses and circles on paper using a variety of pens and pencils. The compass can also scribe ellipses and circles on metal sheets using sharp-point scribers. Since the compass employs a set of metal rings of different diameters to draw (or scribe) ellipses and circles, I called it the Ring Compass. The Ring Compass is a versatile instrument. It can draw or scribe ellipses of any eccentricity between ε = 0.00 (circle) and ε = 0.80, within error bars. The semimajor axis of the ellipse is determined by the radius of the selected ring. Therefore, the semimajor axis can only be varied in steps that depend on the diameter of available rings. However, the angle that the major axis of the ellipse makes with the x-axis can be varied continuously between Θ = - 90° and Θ = + 90°. The principle of operation of the Ring Compass relies on the following everyday observation. Objects with circular rims, like cups and dishes, appear to be oval when they are viewed at an angle away from the vertical direction. We can use geometrical arguments to show that the observed oval curves are in fact ellipses. The pen of the Ring Compass draws the projection of inclined or tilted rings on paper. These projected oval curves are the desired ellipses. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS A - ELLIPSE DATA 1. Semimajor axes (discrete): 90mm; 102mm; 115mm; 128mm; 153mm; 179mm 2. The first two compositions listed below are different renditions of the same melody, while the third one combines synthesized human voices and pads in a new melody. All three compositions are available as free downloads, along with my other compositions, at my SoundClick page. See the link in my Channel description. 1. Majestic Piano © 2025 2.
