Here is Artie Shaw in the Thesaurus Transcription studio in New York City on 15 February 1938. This is just 5 months before his band took off with their monumental recording of "Begin the Beguine." The song performed herein is "The Meade Lux Special" which is a tribute to boogie woogie pianist Meade Lux Lewis. The boogie woogie craze was nascent at this time and would become ever popular by 1940. This rendition is similar in nature to Artie's earlier two-part recording of "The Blues" for Brunswick Records which was done as a march juxtaposed to the boogie beat heard here. This recording demonstrates Artie's full command of the clarinet especially the upper registers. No one hit those high notes back then like Shaw. Other primary contributors to this arrangement are Les Burness on piano, Al Avola on guitar, Sid Weiss on bass, and Cliff Leeman at the drums. Enjoy!
