Welcome to Crime Asia Daily with Paul! Tonight, we examine a case of art meeting the law in Northern Thailand. Police in Chiang Mai have arrested a tourist for spray-painting graffiti on a shop door, an act that has sparked significant outrage among local residents. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Daniel Arav from Tel Aviv, was captured on CCTV on the night of March 30th. The footage shows Arav approaching the roller shutter of Aunty’s Corner restaurant at approximately 11:00 PM and spray-painting a tag. This incident occurred just one day after a group of volunteers had finished repainting and renovating the area. The timing of the vandalism is particularly sensitive, as Chiang Mai is currently preparing for a UNESCO World Heritage status bid. A delegation is expected to visit this June, and residents feel such acts harm the city’s international reputation. Following a manhunt, investigators from the Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station tracked Arav back to his hotel. Under questioning by Police Colonel Pratchaya Thisala, Arav admitted to the act, identifying himself as an artist who enjoys creating graffiti. He painted the Hebrew word "Imma," meaning mother, claiming he acted on impulse because he believed in his own skills. Arav has since expressed deep regret for his lack of situational awareness. He has agreed to pay 20,000 baht in compensation and provide full restitution by repainting the door himself. Despite his apology, he faces serious legal consequences. He has been charged with damaging private property and spray-painting in a public place without permission. If convicted, he faces more than three years in prison, a fine of more than 60,000 baht, or both. Arav remains in custody and will appear before the Chiang Mai Kwaeng Court tomorrow. Remember, stay safe and stay aware.
