The Iele are mythical creatures in Romanian folklore. similar to fairies or nymphs in other traditions. They are often described as capricious beautiful young women. who live in the forests, mountains, air, or certain underground locales. They can be both benevolent or malevolent depending on the situation. The Iele are known for their enchanting songs and dances. It is said that they dance in circles and where they dance. the grass never grows again. Their dance is enchantingly beautiful but also dangerous for any mortal who happens to come upon them. The consequences for interrupting their dance can be severe, ranging from madness to physical harm. While they are often invisible to humans, they can choose to appear usually as beautiful women. Sometimes they are depicted as virgin witches (in a positive sense, unlike the malevolent, old crones often associated with witchcraft in Western culture), other times as beneficial fairies. Their abilities include the power to transform. to bring about disease and death and to reward those who do them services, or to punish men for wrongs committed. They are associated with certain days and times, like Tuesday and Friday, and particular nights (the eve of Saint Andrew, the eve of Saint George, the eve of Easter, etc.). The Iele are a fascinating part of Romanian folklore, reflecting a complex view of the relationship between humans and the natural, spiritual world. They represent elements of unpredictability and inscrutableness that remind humans of their place within and respect towards the mystical aspects of the universe.
