러, 우크라 제소 국제사법재판소 심리 출석 거부 Now it's time for On Point, where we speak to experts to delve deeper into the biggest news stories in the spotlight right now. Even while the Russian military slams cities across Ukraine with rockets shells, the two sides recently announced a cease-fire to allow civilians to flee some areas. Lawyers representing Ukraine and Russia should have been going toe-to-toe at the UN's top court - the International Court of Justice - in a legal bid to end the war. Speaking in The Hague on Monday, the Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in Crimea condemned Russia for "disrespecting international law." However, the Russians refused to show up. Russian forces launched military operations in Ukraine on February 24th, just a matter of days after Moscow recognized Ukraine's breakaway regions, Donetsk and Luhansk as independent republics. President Putin also said the "special military operation" was to "demilitarize" and "denazify" Ukraine. For more, we are joined by Natasha Kuhrt, Lecturer in International Peace & Security in the Department of War Studies at King's College London. Good morning, Natasha. Firstly, we'd like to know if you think the International Court of Justice has any ability to bring the war to an end? And what powers does the court have - if any - to penalize Moscow for its actions in Ukraine? Well a decision is expected on the request for Russia to immediately suspend the military operation within days, although it's doubtful they'll abide by any order. What legal arguments did Ukraine bring to the table? And were you surprised the Russians were a no-show? Western powers have been imposing crushing sanctions on Russia, but insist they aren't going to intervene beyond that. Can you see any scenario under which the West would engage directly in military confrontation with Russia? And hypothetically, if that were to happen, what would likely happen? Finally, President Putin continues to insist that the war is aimed at "demilitarizing" and "denazifying" Ukraine. In your eyes, does Putin's justification for this war hold any water? And if you consider it to be a smokescreen, what are the real reasons? Thank you for your insights. We always appreciate you staying up late to join us.
