Are there Black people in Alaska ?

When I told folks that I was going to #Alaska, I was warned about three things: 1. Bears 2. Moose 3. Ain’t no Black people As someone who has made it her (literal!) business to travel around the world, in search of communities and stories from people of color, I knew that Alaska wouldn’t disappoint. What I didn’t know was that I’d be dropped into the world of photographer Jovell Rennie ( @jovell ) and the Black in Alaska ( @blackinalaska ) exhibit. The Anchorage Museum ( @anchoragemuseum ) gave the Black in Alaska crew a beautifully robust corridor to showcase both the photographs and video-based stories of numerous Black Alaskans, noting their contributions to the community and the culture. It’s a stunningly raw exhibit. You can see the features when you visit the Anchorage Museum or online at blackinalaska.org. And it’s deserved, especially when you come across serial entrepreneur and BabyVend ( @babyvend ) founder Jasmin Smith ( @iamjasminsmith ). Jasmin rides for diverse communities in Anchorage!
