Charting Canada’s Submarine Future: The Path to a Modern Naval Fleet

Canada’s aging Victoria-class submarines are at the end of their operational life, raising urgent questions about the future of the country’s subsurface defence capabilities. As geopolitical tensions rise in the Arctic and Pacific, and with war waging in Europe, Canada faces a critical decision: What type of submarine fulfills Canada’s needs? After announcing late in 2024 that Canada will acquire 12 conventionally powered submarines and after releasing a Request for Information for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project, little information has emerged on this important issue. To understand how Canada may pursue new submarines by weighing the technical capabilities and costs with the consequences of navigating complex relationships, long-term defence goals, and the potential impact on Canada’s maritime force capacity, this webinar will seek to identify which submarines can best serve Canada’s national interests for homeland defence in the Arctic and North America with our obligations to NATO and growing strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific.
