Oustass Omar Bun Jeng (Omar Fadera) A Legacy of Islamic Preaching in The Gambia and Across Senegal Oustass Omar Bun Jeng, born Omar Fadera, was a renowned Islamic preacher who significantly contributed to the propagation of Islam in the Senegambia region during the 1980s and mid-1990s. His teachings and sermons left a lasting impact on many, not only in The Gambia but also in Senegal, where his influence resonated deeply. Omar Bun Jeng passed away on Friday, September 16, 1995, in Gunjur village, located in the Kombo South District of The Gambia. His death was mourned by millions across Senegal and The Gambia, marking a profound loss for the region. Bun Jeng was survived by his four wives, twelve sons, and four daughters. One of the key reasons behind his widespread following was his powerful and melodious voice, which captivated and inspired many people to follow him. His unique style of preaching, combined with his humility and respect for others, earned him immense respect both locally and beyond. Oustass Bun Jeng's sermons on Radio Gambia further increased his popularity, extending his reach across the sub-region. Bun Jeng made his home in Gunjur after being posted there as a teacher. He also established schools in Gunjur and Brikama, where he continued to teach and guide his students. Admired for his captivating Qur'anic recitations, Bun Jeng often delivered sermons and lectures in multiple languages, being fluent in Wolof, Mandinka, and Arabic. Born in Kiang, The Gambia, and raised in Senegal, he was a product of Riyadh University in Saudi Arabia, which further shaped his knowledge and dedication to Islam. Despite being gone for over two decades, Oustass Omar Bun Jeng's legacy continues to live on. Many people still listen to his past recorded sermons, lectures, and Qur'anic recitations across The Gambia. His voice remains a familiar presence, especially during Ramadan, when it is heard on nearly all the radio stations in the country. Oustass Omar Bun Jeng will always be remembered for his dedication to Islam, his profound knowledge, and his role in shaping the spiritual lives of many in Gambia and Senegal.
