We Drove Schaefer Trail in a Ford Transit… Potash Road to Shafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park

We thought we were going for a scenic drive. After a full van life chore day in Moab, we left our campsite expecting golden light, canyon views, and maybe an easy road to a new spot for the night. Instead… Potash Road quietly turned into something we were not prepared for. What started as a peaceful drive became the scariest day of van life. Without realizing it, we found ourselves climbing the infamous Shafer Trail inside Canyonlands National Park. Tight switchbacks. Steep drop-offs. A race against the setting sun. And we’re in a 2022 Ford Transit extended high roof… which is basically a small apartment trying to scale a canyon wall. To make it even better, our GPS pin was at the beginning of the trail… which meant we had no idea how long it would take us to get out. We crawled up every switchback wondering if we were too big, too slow, and too late. This is real van life. Not just sunrise hikes and aesthetic coffee shots. But wrong turns, white knuckles, and growth you didn’t schedule.
