(11 Nov 1997) T/I: 10:11:28 Chinese Premier Li Peng began a six-day visit to Japan on Tuesday (11/11) to mark the 25th anniversary of normalisation of diplomatic relations between Tokyo and Beijing. Besides resentment still felt in China about Japan's occupation from 1937 until 1945, the two countries have a territorial dispute over a group of islands called Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. Beijing is also irritated by military cooperation between Japan and the United States, which it sees as a potential threat to its intention to resume sovereignty over Taiwan. Japan is China's largest trading partner, followed by the United States.
