Rabindra Sangeet’ -- a collection of songs written in Bengali language constitutes an important component of Indian Music , composed by world renowned Nobel Laureate poet and composer Rabindranath Tagore. Over decades these songs have continued to be an integral part of socio-cultural base of Bengali community. Although originally written in Bengali, many of these songs were subsequently translated in other languages and became vastly popular among a much wider group of music lovers all over the world. Being written by a world-renowned poet, these songs have been discussed and analysed for it’s overwhelming literary beauty and strong philosophical foundations. From the musical aspects of Rabindra Sangeet, it is well recognized that though the poet’s musical mind was nurtured largely in an Indian classical/Folk musical environment, but the poet was deeply influenced by Western music as well. This could happen because with his perceptible and brillant musical mind he travelled all over the globe and got exposed to various forms of international music. As a consequence, many of his songs can be identified as brilliant adaptations of some western songs/music . However the influence of Western music on Rabindranath goes beyond this. If one studies his compositions with great care , it may be seen that a large number of his songs are remarkable assimilation of Indian melody-based music line with a hidden movement of Western music- based polyphonic character. As a result these songs can be portrayed on a very broad musical canvas enabling to bring out different emotional content through appropriate arrangements of musical instruments and background. Through the musical collaborations for many years, Prabuddha Raha and Soumitra Sengupta ( with experiences in two different disciplines like’ Rabindra Sangeet’ and ‘Western Classical Music ) have explored this aspect of Rabindra Sangeet with Piano as background instrument. The tonal quality and the versatile character of Piano helps to portray this remarkable feature of Rabindra Sangeet in a new light. We have decided to share our thoughts and excitements on this aspect of Rabindra Sangeet through a recording and a series of performances in India and Abroad.
