In this video, we discuss the proposed Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam High-Speed Rail Corridor and the Kurnool–Vijayawada Semi High-Speed Rail Corridor recently requested by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu during his meeting with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In the recent Union Budget, three major High-Speed Rail corridors passing through the Telugu states were announced — • Hyderabad–Chennai • Hyderabad–Bengaluru • Hyderabad–Mumbai (Additionally, Chennai–Bengaluru via Chittoor has also been proposed.) However, no High-Speed Rail corridor was announced for Visakhapatnam, one of the most important cities in South India. Considering Vizag’s importance as a major port city, industrial hub, and growing economic center, the AP CM requested the Centre to consider a Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam High-Speed Rail Corridor. This route already has extremely high passenger demand. Currently, two Vande Bharat trains operate in this section, yet demand continues to exceed capacity. That shows how important and busy this corridor is. If approved, the Vijayawada–Vizag High-Speed Rail could reduce travel time to just 1.5 to 2 hours. With a maximum design speed of 350 km/h and an operational speed of around 320 km/h (average around 280 km/h), travel time would drastically reduce. Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam could also be covered in nearly 3 hours. Although alignment is not yet finalized, the possible route may pass through: Eluru – Tadepalligudem – Nidadavolu – Rajahmundry – Samalkot – Kakinada – Annavaram – Tuni – Anakapalle before reaching Visakhapatnam. However, this is only a proposal. Final alignment will be decided after detailed surveys if the project gets sanctioned. If implemented, this corridor will not only improve Vijayawada–Vizag connectivity but also connect Vizag to Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai through the broader High-Speed Rail network. The CM also requested a Kurnool–Vijayawada Semi High-Speed Rail Corridor. Currently, there is no direct rail connectivity between Kurnool and Vijayawada. Passengers must travel via Nandyal and Guntur. While special trains operated in the past, no regular direct service exists now. The proposed Semi High-Speed corridor (with speeds up to 220 km/h) would significantly reduce travel time and greatly benefit Rayalaseema region residents, especially those traveling to Vijayawada and Amaravati (the state capital region). Earlier preliminary surveys were conducted for: • Hyderabad–Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam Semi High-Speed Corridor • Kurnool–Suryapet Corridor (which would merge with the Hyderabad–Vizag line) However, now that full High-Speed Rail corridors are being proposed, it remains unclear whether the earlier Semi High-Speed plans will continue or be replaced. At present, the AP CM has officially proposed: • Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam High-Speed Rail • Kurnool–Vijayawada Semi High-Speed Rail Whether the central government approves the High-Speed option or proceeds with a Semi High-Speed corridor will be known in the coming days.
