📋 In April 2003, the World Health Organization was about to publish a scientific report based on two years of research and reviewed by 30 independent experts. The conclusion: people should get less than 10 percent of their daily calories from sugar. Nine days before publication, the Sugar Association sent a letter with a clear message: Kill this report, or we'll kill your funding. The Threat: • Letter to WHO Director-General: "We will exercise every avenue available to expose the dubious nature of the report, including challenging its funding from the US" • Sugar Association claimed WHO received $406 million annually from the United States • The actual figure was $177 million—but the threat was real The Coalition: • National Corn Growers Association joined in • Snack Food Association signed on • U.S. Council for International Business representing over 300 companies including Coca-Cola and PepsiCo The Political Muscle: • Two U.S. Senators got involved: Larry Craig and John Breaux, co-chairs of the Senate Sweetener Caucus • Senator Craig had taken over $36,000 in campaign contributions from the sugar industry • Fourth-largest recipient of sugar money in Congress The Fabricated Science: • Sugar industry cited a National Academy of Sciences report claiming people could safely consume up to 25 percent of calories from sugar • Harvey Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine, was so alarmed he wrote directly to the Health Secretary • Warning: the sugar lobby was lying about their research—the report didn't make that recommendation at all The WHO's Decision: • April 23, 2003: published the report anyway • 2015: WHO strengthened guidelines, recommending below 5 percent of calories from sugar 💪 The sugar industry tried to silence global health science with economic blackmail. They failed. And twenty years of research has continued to prove them wrong. 📚 Fully sourced: WHO official documents, Washington Post, Guardian coverage, JAMA reports -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚡ READY TO TRANSFORM YOUR METABOLISM?
