As wildfires become increasingly frequent and devastating in California, building resilience is paramount. This presentation delves into critical aspects of fire-resilient envelope and HVAC design. We’ll explore how achieving superior airtightness through meticulous envelope detailing, robust exterior walls with insulation and fire-resistant cladding, ember-resistant unvented crawlspaces and foam-free, unvented roof strategies significantly enhance a home’s ability to withstand wildfire threats. Finally, we’ll address considerations for HVAC-related openings, outlining strategies to minimize vulnerabilities. Presenters: Katy Hollbacher, P.E., Beyond Efficiency Katy is a licensed Civil Engineer and former Certified Passive House Consultant, LEED Homes Rater, Certified GreenPoint Rater, and Certified Energy Analyst with over 25 years experience. Katy holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan. She is a nationally sought-after expert in the high-performance building community for consulting, training, and speaking engagements and was a founding board member of Passive House California. Katy believes that adequate planning and collaboration facilitate efficient, common-sense solutions while minimizing change orders, budget overruns, resource and energy waste. Nate Russell, Beyond Efficiency Nate holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Throughout his life, Nate has been involved in many construction projects from simple remodels to full-gut rehabs and new construction. Two highlights include designing and executing a full rehab of a 1910 home that included a deep energy retrofit, resulting in 70% energy savings, and designing and building a high-performance home that achieved a HERS score of 39. He draws upon that firsthand construction experience and technical background to facilitate the adoption of high-performance buildings and practices.
