Master Project Management Organizational Structures! Are you a Project Manager struggling to understand your place in the organization? This essential video demystifies the three main types of organizational structures you'll encounter in project management: Functional, Projectized, and Matrix organizations. As a Project Manager, it is important to understand where in the organization your project is being executed and what kind of organizational structure you will be operating in. Dive deep into: • Functional Organizations: These structures are set up to give authority to the functional managers and the least authority to the project managers. They are centered on specialties and grouped by function, such as HR, Finance, Marketing, or Information Technology. In this setup, decisions on projects must be cleared and approved by functional managers, who completely own the budgets and resources. Working as a project manager here mostly means assisting functional managers to get their work done, potentially including administrative tasks. Functional organizations are siloed and compartmentalized, which can make communication difficult due to enforced organizational hierarchies. • Projectized Organizations: In contrast, these structures give much authority to the project managers, focusing on the projects themselves and aiming to deliver with speed. The goal is to foster loyalty onto projects rather than to the functional managers. Project managers in this environment control all decisions related to resources, budgets, schedule, and quality. Teams are organized around projects and move from one project to another once projects are completed. Project managers tightly control the resources under them, enabling them to deliver on projects with speed and efficiency. • Matrix Organizations: These exist in between functional and projectized types, representing a setup where project managers share authority with functional managers to a level that benefits both sides. Project managers run people management decisions by functional managers, and functional managers run project-related decisions by project managers. Although a project manager might sit in a siloed department, they still have communication lines across the organization through various departments. It's rare to find a perfectly balanced Matrix environment. o Weak Matrix: In this shade, the balance of power shifts towards the functional organization. Project managers have some authority over resources but are not fully in charge, though they may be allowed to make some project-related decisions. o Strong Matrix: Here, the balance of power shifts towards a projectized environment. The project manager has a lot of control over resources and largely makes most decisions on the projects. Understanding these organizational setups is crucial for any Project Manager to navigate reporting hierarchies, manage resources, and make effective decisions. This video provides clear insights into how these different structures impact your projects and authority, helping you walk the tightrope between them.
